HIGHER-LEVEL MATH TUTORING

There's no such thing
as a math person.

There are students who were taught in a way that reached them, and students who weren’t. If your kid has decided they’re “just bad at math,” I promise you the problem isn’t them. It’s a gap nobody went back to fill.

MEET YOUR TEACHER

I'm Beth, a math teacher with 17 years in the classroom.

I help students in grades 8 through 12 understand why math works, from Algebra all the way through Calculus, AP, and IB.

When a student finally understands, they stop dreading math class. Better grades usually follow.

THE REAL PROBLEM I SOLVE

Most math struggles don't start
where the pain shows up.

A student who was doing fine suddenly hits Algebra 2, or Precalculus, or Calculus, and falls apart. The parent thinks their kid stopped trying. The kid thinks they’ve hit the ceiling of what they’re capable of. Neither is true.

What’s really happening is that a foundation from two or three years back was never fully built, and every new topic gets harder to reach because it’s stacked on top of that gap. The class keeps moving. The hole stays.

After 17 years teaching 30 students at a time, I got very good at one thing: spotting the specific student who’s lost, and figuring out exactly why. That’s what I do now, one student at a time. I find what actually broke, I rebuild it, and I teach the reasoning underneath so it holds for the next course instead of evaporating after the test.

HOW I TEACH

I don't teach tricks. I teach why.

I’m not a homework-completion service, and I don’t teach tricks for tomorrow’s quiz.

I start with what you’re working on in class, then I ask questions until I understand how you think about the problem. That tells me where the real gap is. From there we work on the why, connecting each new concept back to the foundation under it, so math starts to feel like something that makes sense instead of a pile of rules to memorize.

I teach the way I train for a marathon. Nothing hard gets built in a day. The messy middle of the process is where the actual work happens, and “I can’t do this” is almost never true. It’s just a step no one has broken down yet. My job is to break it down, stay steady through the hard part, and keep the pressure off while never lowering the bar.

WHO I WORK WITH

Higher-level math is my specialty

Higher-Level Students

Precalculus, Calculus AB & BC, IB Math, and the Algebra and Geometry students building toward them. If your strong kid suddenly cratered, this is almost always a gap-bridging problem, and it’s what I’m best at.

AP & IB Exam Prep

These exams reward real understanding, not test-taking tricks, which is exactly why I teach them and exactly why I don’t do SAT or ACT prep. My classroom experience includes AP Calculus and IB Math at the level the exam demands.

Homeschool Families

When math gets beyond what you can teach at home, I can take it from there. I work virtually during daytime hours, which fits how homeschool days actually run.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Beth Bandy,

I taught high school math for 17 years, most recently in San Jose, before starting this to do the part I love most: sitting with one student and figuring out how they learn.

I’m a National Board Certified teacher with a master’s in Curriculum and Instruction, and I’ve taught everything from Algebra to IB Math. Outside the classroom I run marathons, lift, and sail, because I believe the same thing in both parts of my life: hard things are built through steady, patient work, not talent you’re born with or shortcuts you can buy.

I won’t promise you a grade. I’ll find what’s actually holding your kid back, teach them why the math works, and stay steady through the hard part. Most of the time, the grade takes care of itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. My focus is higher-level math understanding and AP/IB exam preparation rather than standardized-test tricks.
Yes. Virtual daytime tutoring is available for homeschool families, including students who have reached math beyond what a parent wants to teach at home.
No grade is guaranteed. The work focuses on finding the underlying gap, rebuilding the foundation, and teaching why the math works so the student can use it beyond the next test.
